Working with Delaviuda: adapting packaging to a real process challenge

Delaviuda Confectionery Group, a leading company in the confectionery sector specialising in high-quality products such as chocolates and pralines, presented SPG with a very specific challenge: finding a packaging solution capable of responding to the requirements of a process highly sensitive to temperature.

At SPG, we approached this project as we do with every tailor-made development: by understanding the real needs of the customer, analysing the process conditions and working collaboratively to identify the most suitable solution. In this case, the collaboration focused on implementing a solution based on Cold Seal technology, aimed at optimising the packaging of thermally sensitive products.

The main technical challenge lay in the behaviour of chocolate during the sealing process. As Antonio Fernández, Head of Procurement, Supply and Packaging Development at Delaviuda CG, explains:
“We needed a material that would allow us to work without applying heat to the sealing wheels and reduce the temperature at the jaws, as heat could affect the product, causing colour changes or leaving chocolate residues on the packaging.”

Given this starting point, and considering that permeability was not a critical requirement for this application, Cold Seal technology proved to be the most suitable solution. This pressure-based sealing system, which does not require heat, avoids heat transfer to the product and improves process stability on the line.

The solution developed has enabled the optimisation of chocolate and praline packaging, reducing issues associated with thermal sealing and ensuring greater product integrity as well as improved final packaging quality.

Its implementation was made possible thanks to close collaboration between the technical teams of both companies, including process adjustments, line validations and continuous monitoring throughout each stage of the development. As highlighted by Delaviuda:
“It is a supplier we work with in a very aligned way. They understand our needs and are fully involved in the development to ensure the final result.”

This project clearly reflects how we understand our relationship with customers at SPG: as a collaborative process based on proximity, technical expertise and real commitment to each challenge.
