WE NOW OFFER 100% POST-CONSUMER RECYCLED rPET, WITH MORE THAN 50% OF THE MATERIAL FROM TRAYS
As we announced at the beginning of the year, one of our greatest advances in terms of sustainability was the launch of our 100% recycled and recyclable rPET – a thermoformable, monolayer film. We are now delighted to confirm that the production of this material has evolved, and the material is currently 100% post-consumer recycled, with more than 50% coming from trays.
On this project, we worked closely with the PLASTIC SENSE Foundation to select bales of post-consumer trays for incorporation into the rPET film production process. After two years of separating and reusing the material from trays, we carefully honed its quality to produce a 100% post-consumer recycled film, 50% of which is from trays. To get a homogeneous film, we established the minimum acceptable parameters for the tray material, such as the particle size, fine-particle content, moisture, viscosity, alkaline residue, the presence of other polymers and traces of labels, metal, wood and glass. After confirming over time in the laboratory that the batches of recycled tray material were homogeneous, we gradually increased the amount we incorporated into the extrusion until we reached 50%, with results that are comparable to the new rPET material launched in February 2019.
It is important to highlight that our use of recovered flakes in the manufacturing process of rigid polyester film, suitable for food use, is certified by EFSA, evaluation No. 2017/4843. All the post-consumer recycled tray material also carries the ECOSENSE certificate awarded by the PLASTIC SENSE Foundation.
Just another step forward of our path of sustainable transformation!
